Cheerleaders visit NYC; captains ride in parade
“We always had something to do,” Kayli Hyek, a Varsity cheerleader, said.
They also visited a lot of special landmarks, including Ellis Island, the top of the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.
The cheerleaders also went to see the Rockettes dance, watched a Broadway play (In the Heights), went to Good Morning America, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, and even a wax museum.
”I took a picture with Tyra [Banks],” Hyek joked
.During the girls’ spare time, they enjoyed shopping, eating, and touring around the city. The captains, however, did not get as much free time. They were busy preparing for the parade.
At the end of the day when the cheerleaders had room checks at 11 p.m., the coaches would tape the outside their doors to prevent any distractions, and the cheerleaders would get some sleep for the next busy day ahead of them.
On Thanksgiving Day, the girls woke up around 6 a.m. to wait outside for the Macy’s parade to begin.
“We were in the second row. It was so crowded!” Hyek said.
The day after Thanksgiving, the cheerleaders packed their bags and headed home.
“We all had a great time,” Hyek said, “but by the end of the trip we were ready to be home with our friends and family.”
